Our history curriculum is planned using the National Curriculum. We have created a whole school progression map to enhance the curriculum. Teachers use this long term planning to plan units of work and deliver individual lessons. The history curriculum coordinator also promotes whole school events such as Black History Week, Remembrance, Local and Community History Month and VE Day within the history curriculum progression map.

We aim to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. In their history lessons, children are encouraged to think about the following:

Historical Interpretations – Children should understand the ways in which we find out about the past and identify different ways in which it is interpreted.

Historical Investigations – Children should ask and answer questions, using other sources to show that they know and understand key features of events.

Chronological Understanding – Children develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time. They should know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework.

Knowledge and Understanding of Events, People and Changes in the Past – Children should identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. Children should choose and use parts of stories and other sources to show that they know and understand key features of events.

Our history curriculum aims to increase and develop children’s historical skills, concepts, knowledge and attitudes. We aim to increase children’s understanding of the present in the context of the past, develop and use their skills in enquiry, analysis, evaluation and argument.

Our history curriculum aims to strongly support a developing picture of history from a local perspective. Throughout their time at Norbridge, children have the opportunity to visit and learn about the history connected to: Chatsworth House, Sherwood Forest, Perlethorpe, Coal Mining, Creswell Crags, Murton Park, The Holocaust Centre, The National Media Museum and London. We also work with Partake Theatre Company to bring history to life.
